ABOUT THE MINOR

"The academic Minor in Writing is designed for any undergraduate student who is interested in developing his or her disciplinary and professional writing abilities."

-- University of Michigan Minor in Writing Homepage

First year students in the Minor complete three main writing pieces throughout the year: "Why I Write," a re-purposing piece, in which an existing written work is redone to suit a new audience, and then a re-mediation piece, in which the re-purposed piece is reformmatted to suit a new medium. Students also keep a blog to journal about their ideas, progress, frustrations, and triumphs, as well as to interact with classmates about their own projects.

Later, students in the Minor take further courses on writing for new media, argumentative essays, and other upper-level writing. In senior year, students then complete a Capstone project.
